Monumental Stair at The University of Virginia

This six story monumental stair was built for The University of Virginia's College of Arts and Sciences Physical and Life Sciences Research Building. Its creation took about 11 months and included the talents of  Shickel Corporation employees from virtually every department.

When Shickel Corporation first received the invitation to bid from the construction manager, W.M. Jordan Company, through Lynchburg Steel, the structural steel contractor, we knew this stair would be a great project for us. Designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the stair is almost egg shaped, creating beautiful curves and lines . . . and challenges for someone trying to build it out of steel.

Shickel's expert design team and fabricators tackled the complicated project with their usual problem-solving creativity and produced a breath-taking stair.

Shickel's draftsmen started by creating a model of the stair in SolidWorksPreview

Shickel fabricators mocked up each flight in the shop to ensure a good fit during the field installation.
